What Next: The Conception

Let’s set the scene… you’re moving into your new home in Bournemouth for the first time with your partner of one year- let’s call him Luke. You’re stressed from relocating your whole life to a new city where you don’t know anyone or where the local Tesco Express is. Yet you’re excited about your new life and future together. You’re both daydreaming of what’s to come, of what next [see what I did there?!], and you ask Luke the question “what’s something you’ve always wanted to do?” 

What you didn’t expect to be presented with was a business pitch about mystery activities, where customers don’t know what they will be doing until they turn up on the day, and each activity will be unique and different from the last- one week could be candle making, the next a role-playing game like Call of Cthulhu, or another making yourself dizzy by spinning upside on an Aerial Hoop… 

You ask Luke where on earth he got this fantastic idea from, as surely he couldn’t have come up with it?!

But he did. Because he’s a smarty pants. It started when he compiled a bucket list of 30 activities to do before his 30th birthday, including an open water swim race, running a half marathon, joining a hip hop class, singing… the list goes on and even it is exhausting.

Prior to this, Luke had moved to Sydney, Australia, a city surrounded by gorgeous beaches, beautiful sunny weather and a near-constant programme of fun things to do. But what you don’t hear about moving to a new city is how lonely it can be. Luke struggled to find his people- he tried so many new hobbies, both through interest and as a way to meet new people.

And that’s where the idea of what next came from. Offering a wide range of different activities to try that you may not have thought of doing, supporting local businesses, and creating an open and welcoming community with like-minded people who want to have fun and try new things.

You stand there stunned. This sounds exactly like something you’d love- you need to make new friends in your new city, and you like to have a tapas of hobbies to dip in and out of. Oh, and you also want to support Luke in realising his dreams because you love him and blah blah blah.

The subsequent conversation went thusly:

You: Let’s go for it!

Luke: Huh?

You: Let’s actually do it- it sounds amazing!

Luke: What?

You: You know what you’re doing, right? You’re an activities coordinator- your literal job- and I need to make friends. There are only so many boardgame review YouTube videos I can watch.

Luke: What’s wrong with boardgame review YouTube videos? They’re interesting.

You: Not the point. Let’s do what next! What’s the worst that could happen….
